Watson to quit international cricket after World T20
The 34-year-old blond quit Tests last year after losing his battle against a spate of injuries that plagued his career, and has not featured in a One-Day International since September.
"One morning I woke up in Dharamsala, waking up to the beautiful view and I don't know what it was exactly but I knew now was the right time," Watson told reporters in Mohali where Australia take on Pakistan in their next Super 10 match on Friday.
"I've really enjoyed my time being back in the Australian squad. But it is quite different, none of the other guys I played with growing up are here any more," he added.
Watson made his One-Day debut against South Africa in 2002, three years before he broke into the Test team led by Ricky Ponting.
He played along side the likes of Ponting, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist and also helped to rebuild the side after his seniors quit the game.
Since his 2005 Test debut against Pakistan, regular hamstring and back injuries have taken a toll on Watson's body, prompting him to end his Test career after 59 matches, scoring a total of 3,731 runs to go with 75 wickets.
Watson, along with three team mates, was axed during the team's tour of India in 2013 for ignoring team order and the all-rounder said he considered retirement after the "homework" controversy under the then coach Mickey Arthur.
"That was a time I certainly was considering my future within the Australian team because at that point in time I certainly wasn't enjoying the environment at all," he said.
"It changed within two or three months with Darren (Lehmann) coming in (as coach) and changing things around."
Watson was a bigger force in limited overs cricket, amassing 5,757 runs in 190 One-Dayers averaging 40.54 and was part of Australia's 2007 and 2015 World Cup winning teams.
A World Twenty20 title continues to elude Australia but Watson was adjudged player of the tournament at the 2012 edition of the tournament in Sri Lanka.
The big-hitting all-rounder, who attracted a $1.4 million bid from Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction last month, will continue to play domestic Twenty20 tournaments including the Big Bash League for the Sydney Thunder, Cricket Australia said.
"Shane should be proud of his contribution to Australian cricket," CA chief executive James Sutherland said.
"At his best, he was a devastating batsman and skilful swing and seam bowler who thrilled crowds the world over. And to his enormous credit he is the only Australian batsman to have scored centuries in all three forms of the game.”

Arvind Kejriwal has been named among the world's 50 greatest leaders by Fortune magazine with the Delhi Chief Minister being the sole Indian leader on the list topped by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.Fortune's third annual 'World's 50 Greatest Leaders' list features men and women from across the globe from the fields of business, government, philanthropy and the arts who are "transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same."
47-year-old Aam Aadmi Party chief is ranked 42nd on the list and is the sole leader from India.
However, South Carolina's Indian-American Governor Nikki Haley is also on the list at 17th while another Indian- American Resham Saujani is at the 20th spot. Fortune credits Kejriwal for his efforts to curb pollution in New Delhi through the scheme of allowing vehicles of odd and even numbers on alternate days on the city's roads.
"When Kejriwal unveiled a blueprint to tackle the smog in New Delhi -- called the world's most polluted city by the World Health Organization -- many were sceptical. A key component: an 'odd-even' pilot project in which vehicles were allowed on the roads only on alternate days.
"The uplifting result of the pilot this January: roads were less clogged, hourly particulate air pollution concentrations dropped by 13 per cent, and citizens could breathe deep," Fortune said.
It said leadership is not "demagoguery, pandering, even populism" but is defined by people across the world "you've never heard of who are rallying followers to make life better in ways you never imagined."

The heat is on India against resurgent Pakistan
The safety net will not be in vogue again, the parachute will not be deployed anymore. The crushing defeat in Nagpur has ensured that, with the only lifeline available already used up, India's next fall will be a freefall with drastic consequences.
This is hardly the scenario India, or their teeming millions of fans, would have envisaged a few days back, at the start of their Super 10 campaign against New Zealand in the ICC World Twenty20. The general belief was that India would grab early momentum and hope to ride its wave at the iconic Eden Gardens, against best buddies and fiercest rivals Pakistan.
This is hardly the scenario India, or their teeming millions of fans, would have envisaged a few days back, at the start of their Super 10 campaign against New Zealand in the ICC World Twenty20. The general belief was that India would grab early momentum and hope to ride its wave at the iconic Eden Gardens, against best buddies and fiercest rivals Pakistan.
Instead, it's Pakistan who find themselves far better placed against a team they have failed to conquer across ten showdowns in the 50-over World Cup and the World T20 combined. Their late arrival in India stemming from concerns about security in Dharamsala - and the subsequent switch of this mega clash to the City of Joy - is no more than a distant memory now. Pakistan have embraced Kolkata as much as the Kolkatans have embraced them, and in some ways, given that they have been here for five days, it is almost as if it is Shahid Afridi's men that are the home team.
One of the disadvantages of playing at home in a tournament of this magnitude is that every centre worth its salt wants to host the Indian side. India are thus playing their four Super 10 games at four different venues. For all their familiarity with home conditions, they are second best to Pakistan here at Eden - the Pakistanis played a practice game against Sri Lanka and kicked off their Super 10 skirmishes with a commanding win over Bangladesh. A similar situation will greet them in Bangalore (Bangladesh would have played Australia before they take on India) and Mohali (Australia run into Pakistan before they meet India), which means the opponents will have better immediate knowledge of the venue than will the designated tournament host.
Never mind. India's immediate task is to extend their hegemony over Pakistan in World Cups if they are to keep themselves in the hunt for a last-four place. It isn't a task beyond them - the same team sent Pakistan tumbling to 83 all out in admittedly vastly differing conditions in Mirpur last month - but for that, they must excise the potentially debilitating psychological after-effects of the Nagpur drubbing inflicted by New Zealand spin. However incredible that might sound.
India pride themselves on their bouncebackability. Never will that trait be tested more seriously than on Saturday (March 19). Pakistan are dangerous front-runners who can get on a searing roll when they start a competition in sprightly fashion. They have begun this tournament as spectacularly as any other side with a commanding rout of Bangladesh, and like Waqar Younis pointed out, are approaching a World Cup game against India without pressure of any sort for perhaps the first time.
Flydubai flight FZ981 crashes in Russia
A flydubai Boeing 737-800 passenger jet has crashed in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, on March 19, 2016. According to the latest reports, all 55 passengers and the seven crew members on board have died. Coming from Dubai, the flight FZ981 was scheduled to land at 1:20 a.m. Moscow time but missed the runway. Circling for about two hours, it finally went down at 3:50 a.m. local time after making a second attempt. While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be confirmed, poor visibility and high winds are believed to be the main factors. At the time of the crash, winds were blowing at the speed of 60 mph (97 kmph).
